Traveling overseas is a dream for many, but just as many give up the idea because they either never have the discipline to save enough money to accomplish it, or believe that it might be much more expensive than it must be. Many people have been able to fund their overseas travel using a combination of strategies.
Some have become quite adept at finding the lowest fares, or combining low fares on multiple airline. Frequent travelers may have accumulated enough frequent flyer points for a free trip, thus eliminating the biggest expense.
Other people have taken a second job and used the money earned strictly to fund their travel and nothing else. Some have bartered their skills for things they will need on their traveling overseas, which might be simply a backpack and whatever belongings then can load on it. Backpacking avoids paying the luggage charges that many airlines now require. Backpackers will also avoid spending money on souvenirs while on their travels, or if they do buy any mementos, they will mail them back instead of taking them back with them.
Many people have been able to fund their traveling overseas by selling a selection of their belongings on online auction sites such as eBay. A simple change of lifestyle such as selling the car and taking a bicycle or public transportation at least until their overseas adventure, may yield enough cash to get it done. This is superior to going on an overseas adventure when it cannot be afforded.
Resorting to a personal credit line to fund a trip is not wise if money is not saved up to repay it. Promptly are well off and have some cash in the bank, charging the entire adventure on a credit card is easy if they’re able to pay off the entire amount when they get the bill and not pay interest. Using a credit card alone however, can also create unforeseen problems like a lost or stolen credit card, which someone could use quickly to rack up charges before the credit card owner notifies the bank that the card was stolen.
Credit cards could also be used for identity theft or to discover the address of the owner and burglarize the home while they are away. If the unlucky credit card owner is overseas when they lose the card, and has little if any cash available they are often stuck in a land far away. If the credit card owner charged the entire adventure from home before departure, they may find unpleasant surprises such as accomodations that were misrepresented.
